How to choose a courier in Madrid

Most people booking a courier in Madrid for the first time compare on price and then discover the thing that actually mattered was something else — a cut-off time, a signature, or whether the van could reach the door.

Here is what to settle before you book.

Work out what kind of job it is

Couriers are not interchangeable. A single urgent envelope across the centre, a pallet to Getafe, and a parcel to another province are three different services, often from three different companies.

• Point-to-point, urgent, within the city — a dedicated courier collects your item and takes it straight there. Nothing else is on the vehicle. Fastest, and priced accordingly.
• Same-day, scheduled — collected in a window and delivered by the end of the working day, usually alongside other consignments.
• Next-day or standard parcel — the item goes into a national network. Cheapest per item, and fine for anything that is not time-critical.

If the deadline is real, say so when you book rather than assuming a standard service will make it.

Check the coverage, not just the city

"Madrid" means different things to different operators. Some quote for the municipio, some for everything inside the M-40, some for the whole Comunidad. A delivery to Alcalá de Henares or Getafe may be priced quite differently from one to Chamberí, even though people describe both as "Madrid".

Ask which zone your pickup and destination fall into before comparing quotes.

Ask about the cut-off time

Same-day services run against a cut-off — book after it and your "same-day" delivery is tomorrow. Cut-offs differ by provider and are usually earlier than people expect, particularly on Fridays and before public holidays.

Decide whether you need proof

For anything with consequences — contracts, keys, documents for an official process — what you want is evidence it arrived, not speed.

• A signature on delivery is standard with most couriers if you ask for it.

Think about the last fifty metres

Large parts of central Madrid are pedestrianised or have restricted vehicle access, and plenty of buildings have no lift and a portero who is only there in the morning. A courier on a bike or scooter will often reach a Malasaña address faster than a van can.

When you book, give the access details you would give a friend: door code, floor, which buzzer, when someone will actually be there. Most failed deliveries are failures of information, not of logistics.
